Oliver 550 Diesel

Just obtained a nice 550 Diesel. I am in the process of changing the fluids. It states in the operator's manual, to make sure not to over fill the oil bath air cleaner or the engine may "run away". I refilled the air cleaner reservoir to the full line. Now I am a little scared. I am quite careful, but still leery. How safe is safe and should this reservoir be run a little lower than the designated oil level? Is there a dry element air cleaner available for this model tractor? This tractor is a 73 or 74 model. Anyone have this model tractor "run away"?

if you stay at the full line you should be ok. I can't say that I've heard of one running away. My granddaddy had a 58 diesel and we always stopped at the mark. Hopefully somebody can share more info for you.

If you are that worried remove the precleaner above the hood so just the intake pipe is there. Get a short board that will cover the air pipe and start it. If it starts to run a way which is will not put the board over the pipe. This will shut off the air to the engine and the engine will stall because it needs the air to run.

I have multiple Oliver diesels one of them I've had for over 10 years and gets used a lot. I fill them all to the mark and have never had a problem.
