Looking at a White 2-88 to possibly buy.Has 3400 hrs.on a working meter.Tractor is complete minus door and window.Runs and operates like it should. As can be seen from pictures needs paint and a cab kit,and a new drive tire. The clutch is good, left brake is weak.Transmission and over/under/direct work good.Asking price is 8k.What do you guys think?Thank's for any comment's,insight and/or opinion's.

A little story. When I was at the New Holland dealer we had two same model pre '64 utilities, don't remember now if they were NAA or 600, or 801, doesn't really matter to the story. One looked in about the same condition as this 2-88, but it ran like a Swiss watch, had a good clutch, quiet trans and rear end, the other was painted up like a $500 "escort", but had a tired motor, barely OK clutch and the rear end was loose. We couldn't get within $1000, and sold the "tart" before the good tractor. The 2-88 has the .4 version of the 354, which I think is better than the later Phaser/1006.X versions, and the items that cost THOUSANDS to fix are OK, engine, over/under, trans/rear end are OK, it is the parts that cost HUNDREDS that they are worried about.

I have to agree with Ian. Those 2-88s aren't common, but not because they weren't a good tractor,it's just because not many were made. That's a pretty darned low hour tractor. Strip that rough sheet metal off, repair or replace it and you've got something there. I'd say 8 does sound high, but I'd offer 7 and come up if I had to. I gave 9 for a 79 2-105 with 4600 hours three years ago,but the 2-88 and 2-110 are something special in my book.

Thank's for input guys.Appreciate it.Tractor does run really good. And he will take 7k for it.

Have you checked the serial and model number on the tag to make sure it really is a 2-88 and not a 2-85? I'd do that. The dealer I got mine from had a 2-105 sitting there one time with 2-110 decals.

Was going to do that but forgot when I was looking at it.Transmission shift levers are in a console...when was that changed?I'll see if owner can text me serial number tag or I will go back to check it out. Thanks

Judging by the decals on side panels and side panels themselves looks to be original to tractor.
