1850 steering

My 1850 steering is locking up due to some sort of hydraulic issue related to the hyd control under the seat. It works fine if I Hold the outside hydraulic control lever back and can eventually get it so it steers ok for an hour or so. As soon as I need to move the loader up or down the lock up starts again. I am going to swap out the hydraulic control tomorrow with one from one of my parts tractors but I would like to understand what is causing this so I can repair the old controls once I have them on a bench.

Before you pull the control unit, check the flow divider to see if the spring inside is stuck. Last year I lost power steering on my 2-70. but it would work if a hydraulic control lever was held open. Turned out the flow divider spring was jammed by a piece of rubber in the hydraulic oil. (From the gasket on the end of the hydraulic filter.)

I will check that. Thanks for the tip. After 50 years I would be surprized if there was not rubber and dirt particles all through the system. I still can?t get my head around how the one hydraulic control on one bank affects the steering and the other side does not.
