1755 Injection Pump

With the help of the folks on this forum, especially dieseltech, I got the injection pump in on my 1755. I did mess up by not timing it before I took the old one off. I thought I had the new one timed, but it won't fire. I get smoke when I crank it, so I don't think air is the problem - it also seems to be turning over hard. I'm thinking I have the pump timing out by 180 degrees?
Thanks
Pete

Align the pump marks again, and remove the valve cover. If pump is assembled correctly, and installed correctly the number SIX rockers will be on overlap. Meaning exhaust almost closed and intake starting open. If number ONE rockers are on overlap, pump is 180 degrees out of time to engine. If so, turn the engine EXACTLY one turn, remove the two bolts on the pump drive gear and turn pump shaft nut 1/2 turn and retime.
