can someone tell me how to free up the telescoping steering in an 1855 , kind with button in center of wheel , it worked when i bought tractor but dont use it much & now its tight . can get button to push but shaft is stuck , any trick to this one?

Is it stuck pulled out or collapsed? I had the one on my 1955 seize extended one winter and all I did was shoot some wd40 down the shaft and tap it with a rubber mallet a couple times and it freed right back up.

its stuck completly down , i really never use it , thats partly the cause probably. if its to much to fix ill just leave it alone was just hoping it would work for my grandkids to drive easier

My 1550 was like that. I pulled the steering wheel off and drove a brand new 1550 underneath it, threw the old steering wheel away and put a new one on. That’s been 2 or 3 years ago and it’s run perfect ever since!

In all seriousness, if it’s froze up and it’s not winter, then it’s had water sitting in it for a long time and has rusted stiff. WD40 is about as useful as someone telling you to make a fist when a bee is around, saying it won’t sting you because of the fist. Get some Kroil, or similar quality penetrating oil. Spray a bunch in every week for a couple months, and it will eventually free up. If you try to get it to free up in a single day, you’re wasting your efforts.

Before you give up on it, try some Hagen's brew on it and gently tap it every couple of days. Apply more Hagen's and keep tapping. Hagen's Brew is 50:50 mixture of ATF and acetone. Put it in a spray bottle and shake it before you spray. Time is also your friend.

Yea stuck all the way down complicates things. Luckily, if you pull the bellows off the shaft you can get to the 4 bolts that hold the column to the steer motor and get it off so you can work on it on a bench. Best case scenario it's just gummed up not rusted and some penetrating oil and time will free it. Worst case you may need a little help from some mild heat.

Kroil is very good. I wouldn't think the unit is designed to allow water to sit in it,
sounds like it is.
