front crankshaft oil seal leaking I am looking at parts catalogue, shows a cork seal and a spring assembly is this still used or is there a lip type seal available ? thanks

cork seal still available, expensive and not very durable. you could convert to a lip seal but would need to switch the front cover as well from a later four digit.

When you get your front cover off examine the area that the seal bears against. If it isn't nice and smooth the new seal will not last. That would be the time to update to the new front cover. The cork seal needs to be soaked in oil (I let it go overnight) before installation to allow the cork to absorb some oil for initial startup. It is NOT a bad design, you have to remember your leaky seal is probably quite old, if it isn't then it wasn't soaked before install or the cover wasn't smooth.

Question: Is the crankcase under positive pressure? This type of seal with,a splash plate behind, will not cope if the crankcase is under pressure.

I put a lip seal on my 77 without changing the front cover or removing it, took the crank pulley off, filed the little bumps inside the cover where the new seal goes, put the new seal in with silicone around the outside, cleaned the pulley where the new seal rides, put it together and no more leak. I think I got the seal from Korves or Maibach.
