Oliver 500 info

I've been emailing Peter Williams at David Brown Parts Ltd in England about some parts. I've been giving him some details about its characteristics, including this picture of the tag that's in place of the serial tag.

Here's what he said in his last reply today:
It is certainly looking like your tractor is a prototype from the experimental department!

I know that doesn't mean it is for sure, but it's promising. Looks like it could be one of those two sent to Georgia in December of 1959.

Note to Oliver Jim,Peter has one of those downswept manifold pipes. He's sending it along.

Yep,might be the thing everybody, including myself, dreams of as a collector. That ultra rare barn find!

I'd say it must be one of the test units. If not that, then maybe they sent the first production batch before they got "proper" s/n tags made.

In any case, it's a find!

I have wondered about the later s/n tags saying Made in England. I would have thought that Oliver would not really wanted to advertise that the tractor was "foreign". I don't think there were laws back then requiring a manufacturer to state the country of origin.

Thats good news Randy about the downward exhaust pipe and the rarity of the tractor. It was good meeting you on Monday and keep us informed on the progress of the 500

Will do Jim. Great meeting you too. Thanks again for bringing those parts over. I emailed Nelson and told him what Peter said about it. Joy said he's on the road, but he'll sure be interested when he gets back.

I got the bolts out of that manifold today. All it took was some heat and the bolts came right out.

Unless that was one of DBs requirements. Could have been a two way street.

True. A subtle way to get folks thinking about British tractors?

Is your reproduction serial number plate aluminum? My original one is brass and in OK shape, but I was thinking about making a new one on the CNC mill. Just have to remember to order some brass sheet next time I'm buying other material.

I'm not sure what it's made of. It's pretty light. I got it from Lyle Dumont at Oliver Decals.

So is the down swept manifold pipe that much of an odd ball item? Mine has it on with the muffler and pipe that is under the step and axle. Always thought it was odd that it was like that and still has the oval hole in the hood for top side exhaust.

I think the downswept exhaust must not have been ordered by very many buyers. Of all the pics I've seen of 500s only 2 have not had the vertical exhaust.

Yes,Oliver Jim had one. I have it. Looks like it's not going to quite close up the hole since there's a little damage from a loose pipe banging around and wallowing out the hole, but the crack in that one spot will be minimal.

You're gonna have to work that hood over. Maybe weld in some new metal. You got the tools and skills from straightening out those orchard fenders. Fixing up the hood should be easy. OK, so it won't be easy, but you know that the plug not fitting right will bother you. ;)

90% of the hole is good, there's just one little place where it looks like a pipe has hit the front and back of the hole. There just isn't enough of a lip on that plug to say so. I don't know that I could stick the tip of my jack knife in the crack that there'll be between the plug and the metal. We'll see how it looks. This might be one of those "They'll never see it from the road" kind of things. lol

Kevin,I just got to thinking about something. You mentioned having your original serial tag and needing a new one. Your 500 is one of the last ones isn't it? Does yours have the shield tag like the three in the other picture or is it the keystone tag like this one on my 1365? They changed the decals and tags on the other tractors in 63 and I know the decals were different on the last 500s,I just didn't know if they updated the tags.

My tag is the shield shape like your gasser has.

Best I've been able to figure with my S/N being 101937 that there were only 63 built after mine.

I starting to think that Oliver/White was a pretty confused place in 63.

I think production ended in April of 63,so they probably just burned off inventory. I wouldn't be surprised if there were several already made up that were never used and just got tossed.
