Perkins or Waukesha How do you determine?

I am looking for an 1850 and I have read that the Perkins engine is the best engine to get in those tractors, and to stay away from the Waukesha engine.

My question is, by just looking at ja photo of the tractor, is there any way to determine what engine it has? Is there some unique thing about the Perkins that will it it away?

If I am next to the tractor at an auction, how can I tell what engine it has?

The people who bad mouth Waukesha engines are the ones who want to do overhauls with a screwdriver, hammer, and Cresent wrench. They a fine fuel efficient engines for their power class and displacement, but are intolerant of improper operation and maintenance. Like calling a Lear Jet junk because it isn't as fault tolerant as a Piper Cub (slight exaggeration).
