diesel exhaust fumes and smoke

Here's something to think about. Have a Oliver 1650 Diesel, John Deere 4020 Diesel, and Oliver 990 all stored in the end of a barn. During the winter I would start them and let them run for a while. There is only one door. When I let the 4020 or the 1650 run for a while the fumes and smoke was terrible, burns your eye, either one. Started the 990 by itself a couple weeks age and let it run for a while. When I went back in the barn there was very little smoke and hardly any fumes. The 2 cycle Detroits were taken of the market because of emissions. Makes a person wonder.

Our 1750 diesel will put out a lot of nasty when cold. Same thing at work with cat engines. Some way worse than others. Has nothing to do with hours either. Can't remember seeing a Detroit smoke bad if it was in good shape. Had a bunch in ts-14b terex scrapers. Seemed to run pretty clean.

I think a lot of the smell is effected by compression ratio. The old 144/172 Ford Diesels had a very acrid smell to the exhaust and were at the bottom end of Diesel compression, where the Detroit's were higher, just my opinion. I posted along time ago (and got a lot of ribbing for it too) that I could tell which of my tractors was running by the exhaust smell even if I couldn't see or hear them. I used the same fuel and engine oil in all so that wasn't a factor. The Deere 219 in the backhoe smelled different than the 3208 in the 4-175, and the Waukesha in the 77, etc.

When I worked for JD the tractors that burned your eyes or smelled bad usually needed the air filters changed.

I absolutely agree . I can tell whether it's a 3208 or a waukasha or a Herc or a Perkins by the cold weather start up smell. Especially the cat or the Perkins, they have a very distinct odor. To this day, when ever I start the 105 the smell takes me back years ago working at the dealership starting up the White combines.

Might be right about compression ratio. My 2150 with military 465 in it with the high ratio of 22 to 1 ratio isn't bad at all either.
