Has anyone ever swapped out the engine in a 70 with an engine from a later model 77? I have a 1947 Oliver 70S that needs an engine. I've seen a complete 1951 Oliver 77 engine for sale and wonder how similar the two engines are. Is is a pretty simple bolt up replacement or are there a lot of modifications that would be required?
I also have access to an engine from a 1953 dodge pickup (from my father-in-law when he put a more modern engine in his old truck). Its a flathead 6, but I once heard that an engine from a dodge truck would fit nicely in an old 70. I have no clue if this is true or not.
If the 77 engine requires modifications or adapter plates then i'm inclined to try the dodge truck swap first...since the engine is easier to get and i'm guessing an adapter plate of sorts would be needed anyway. But if the 77 will go in cleanly, then i'll pursue that route.
Just curious what others have done/seen. Thank you for your help.
