Oliver 70 Engine Swap

Has anyone ever swapped out the engine in a 70 with an engine from a later model 77? I have a 1947 Oliver 70S that needs an engine. I've seen a complete 1951 Oliver 77 engine for sale and wonder how similar the two engines are. Is is a pretty simple bolt up replacement or are there a lot of modifications that would be required?

I also have access to an engine from a 1953 dodge pickup (from my father-in-law when he put a more modern engine in his old truck). Its a flathead 6, but I once heard that an engine from a dodge truck would fit nicely in an old 70. I have no clue if this is true or not.

If the 77 engine requires modifications or adapter plates then i'm inclined to try the dodge truck swap first...since the engine is easier to get and i'm guessing an adapter plate of sorts would be needed anyway. But if the 77 will go in cleanly, then i'll pursue that route.

Just curious what others have done/seen. Thank you for your help.

Look for another 70 engine! The 70 engine is a D model Continental. The 77 is a Waukesha. They mount totally different. There probably a lot of 70 tractors in tractor salvage yards. Where are you located? A 70 standard is probably more valuable than a 70 row crop especially with the correct engine

Yes, an original 70 engine would be the best option, especially if I could find one that runs...but it can be hard to find that. That's why I was wondering about the 77 engine and the dodge truck engine... They both run and are around pretty cheap (or free in the case of the dodge engine). I'm not really wanting to sink $1500 to $2000 buying and rebuilding an engine. And I'm not aware of any tractor salvage yards near me (northern Utah).

I have seen a 70 with a 6 cylinder 226 flat head continental in it once. I wonder if that might not be too bad to fit in. I am more about original
myself though.

I have seen straight sixes and v8s. Anything you go with you are going to have to make adapters and engine mounts. If you're capable of that you can do it inexpensive. If not it would be cheaper to find or fix an original engine.
