Starter problem?

Not quite sure there farmers but on my 55' Oliver here lately my stater has not been engaging my flywheel when I go to start it, unless I back off the three bolts that hold the starter on. I'm getting a good amount power to my solenoid with the key on. About 12.89 volts. Yeah its crazy if I back off the 3 bolts it will start it up. I tore it a part about a year ago and cleaned her up a bit. What do think it might be, solenoid, the connections and grounds are all good. :?

Have someone turn the key and try to start it while you check the voltage at the starter to see how much voltage drop you have between the solenoid and the starter. Is this on a Super 55 ? Gas or diesel?

Don't know about you,but I need more info. The one on my 1550 used to lock. I'd have to loosen the bolts and wiggle it to get the Bendix out of the ring gear. A rebuilt starter took care of that.

Volts without amps is not indicative of power. You need both for power.
Guessing this is an inertia starter?
Bent shaft, worn out bendix or rubbished ring gear are the usual suspects.

This is what I found in my 1550. It locked up once when we were baling and I took the end cover off right in the field and wiggled the shaft with pliers. It was OK for a few months but did it again but the plier trick didn't get it loose. Have you pulled the starter to bench test it?

It might be interesting to disassemble the starter drive off the armature and put the armature in a lathe between centers and see if runs true. Yea, I agree not enough information. J.
