White 2-88 PTO shaft

My son had to pull the engine to replace leaking rear engine seal. Pulled the pto shaft rearward about 8" before removing engine. Pulled back just using one hand, was easy. Engine back in with everything in place as before removed. Now pto shaft will only go in flywheel hub splines a little ways. Splines enter a little because cant turn shaft by hand. tried turning shaft for different spline mating but no go. Don't want to force if damage could occur. Moved rearward so easy, cant understand why shaft don't want to go back in. Any suggestions before pulling motor out again?

I remember having trouble getting the one back in my 2-105. Trying to remember what I did. Seems like I put a short bolt in the hole in the end,then put a socket and long extension on it with a breaker bar and turned it a little. Pretty sure it involved tapping on it with a hammer a little too.
