62 Oliver 550 Industrial grinding in 6th gear

Hi,

I'm very new to the forum and tractors. Looking for some help. I've been looking at a 62 Oliver 550 Industrial with loader. Seems to run well. Has good power and hydraulics are very strong. The one issue is when driving in 6th gear and you push in the clutch there is a noise from the rear end. Almost like a grinding noise. Wont last more than a second or two. It does not do it in any other gear but I can get it to do it almost every time in 6th gear.

Any ideas as to what this could be? Difficulty to repair and maybe how it impacts value of the tractor? He is asking $3800.00. Is this something that needs to be addressed immediately or can wait?

Thank you in advance for any help and guidance you can provide me.

Could possibly be the throw out bearing, but I don't know why it would be more prevalent in 6th gear.

We discussed that but it is only there in 6th gear. You can feel it and hear it and only when you push the clutch in.its not there any other time.

When load removed from the input side driving the axles, the axles back drive the bull gears which back drive the differential. The noise would still be there unless it is a function of the speed of the back driving which may be why you only hear it at higher speeds. Sounds like a rear end tear down and new bearings. Also the noise may not actually be coming from the rear end, just transferring from elsewhere.

What would one expect to pay to have the work done? Hoe does that effect the value of the tractor?

I like the differential IanC is suggesting. Here's a problem you might find. There are thrust bearings (Oliver part number 1ES-5020, bearing number is Nice 7073)in the differential that to my knowledge can not be found new. You might get some used ones from someone parting out a tractor. Kent in Texas, kgteinc(at)yahoo.com may have some if you find that to be the problem. You will need to drain the tranny, take the transmission top off and remove the axles and bull gears to get the differential out. It's not a hard job, but just make sure you have the main frame well supported.

This makes sense. I'm certain I can do the work. But 2 questions.

If you were looking at a tractor you thought needed this, what would you pay?

How long can this be let to go before it has to be done w out causing more damage?
