Saginaw hydramotor (steering)

Saginaw parts or new steering motors are not available. GM left the business. I replaced mine on the 1550 with a new Char Lynn. Maibach's had the complete kit to change everything out. It was about $700.00 for everything, but tractor now steers like a dream.

That seems to be the acceptable solution, replace the Saginaw with a Charlynn.

I think you will find prices have gone up, looking at $900 to $1200 to do the conversion today.

Anything can be repaired, it may not be economical, but it can be repaired.

You didn't say what you are working on. If it is a XX50 series with open center you may be able to source a lower hour unit from a combine. If you are working on a 17/18/1955 with closed center I wish you luck. When I worked at the Oliver/White dealer in the mid 80's to the early 90's there were NO parts. What we heard at the time was that GM scrapped everything they had left to avoid liability. There was a guy in Ohio that was taking several used units and making one good one, but even that was years ago. I don't remember a name or town. John Schwiebert might remember the guy.

There was a guy on Facebook that was just asking about these the other day. He was thinking about getting into rebuilding them, and was wondering if there was anyone else doing it.

I put the Oliver Special Steering Kit from force America in my uncle 1600 a few years ago. Its a charlynn conversion kit and it fit good. I ordered the hose kit but returned it after finding a few different fittings and having the hoses made at the parts store, i liked the way this fit better. I got the kit with the steering column and then went to work and cut the new and old steering columns so i could keep the original telescoping column. from above the dash you cant tell its been changed. Force America fort dodge IA 800-362-2994 I talked to Byron if he's still there he was very helpful. they have other stores but this kit comes from fort dodge and they know what its all about so i would call there. Its not cheap but when you cant get the parts for your old one what else is there to do especially when good steering is a safety issue.
