4-80-17 White backhoe

Have this White 4 80 17 backhoe 4x4. It has the Waukesha 6 cylinder diesel engine. I installed a 2000 watt external canister--KATS- Water heater to heat up the engine. It heats the water in the radiator, but not so much in the block if any.
Sitting on the tractor on the right side of the engine near the rear of the engine is a drain--that is where the inlet for the heater is hooked. The high side is near the front of the engine near the thermostat. These are the only two places where I can see to hook up the heater. All of the heat is going into the radiator--it appears.
This tractor is the industrial version of the Oliver 1650 or the 1655 with the WAUKESHA.
Thanks for any help......

The White 4-78 diesel forklift I have uses a heating element in the lower hose casting, is a bit slow but does work. See if you have a plug to take out and install the element there.

Hello dieseltech---On my tractor the Big power steering pump sits right in front of the lower radiator housing. The pump is very close to the housing.
Any chance you would have a pic of the heating element on your tractor without having to go out in the very cold weather???
Thank you len in michigan

Lenray, I have a picture of the elbow and fitting you would remove. The bigger elbow is off a 1650 and the smaller is from a 1555. I thought the power steering is on the left side? Elbow should be on alternator side if I remember correctly. The last picture is what the element looks like similar to a water heater element.

Thanks Greg--yes the big power steering unit is right under the alternator, both on the right side. If I removed the power steering unit I probably could install a unit like you show in your pics-then reinstall the power steering.
Is the 4 80 17 the industrial version of the 1650 or the 1655????

Lenray, I looked up online and the 4 is for 4 wheel drive the 80 for horsepower and 17 for digging depth of the hoe. It also said based on the 1655 and built around 1975. I had a 1650 with loader that had the Reverse O Torc.

lenray I just bought a KAT'S 1500w tank heater that I was going to install on my 1650. But got so p_ssed at the dumb instructions that I just returned it. I'll stick with my 1000w block heater like greg is showing -- it works. If I had installed the tank heater, I would have used the rear drain as you did, but instead for the inlet (output from the heater) and use the iron elbow fitting below the water pump for the outlet (coolant going into the tank heater) ... so catawumpus from the way you have. Not sure if it would have worked, but I thought the hot coolant from the tank would rise up into the cylinder head and work it's way forward and back down. Here is a post from BANDITFARMER showing the way he did it on his 1550: poke here

Also, I read alot of bad reviews on these KATS tank heaters complaining that they just quit. They used to make them with a red tank and I think those were more reliable years back.

Greg and Allis I tried to find, on the net, one of those L shaped lower radiator hose type heaters. Was not able to find that type anywhere. I had one on a 77 Oliver many years ago. If I could find one I could remove the power steering unit and install it.
That really big power steering pump covers all of the lower radiator hose area and there is not any room to fish a hose into that area. I could remove the power steering pump and see if there is any clearance there. I went to the top radiator hose AREA where there was a fitting and it puts all the heated water into the RADIATOR and not into the block.....thanks for the info. It is an Industrial 1655

Lenray, I found a heater that will fit my elbow on the YT Mag parts site for 55 dollars. I would think that cast elbow is on your tractor right below the water pump and the other end goes to the bottom radiator hose.

You just need the heater like Greg is showing you. I have a Oliver 1655 and it has that style. The hot water raises up through the block form this element. They work fine. They are not a fast heater so several hours in real cold weather. When the 1655 I have was a more daily chore tractor I just kept it plugged in 24/7 when it got really cold.

Oliver block heater from YT.

I use magnetic oil pan heaters, no installation needed. As I don't use any one tractor that often I don't have to worry about wether the coolant heater will still work. I have several of these heaters and can put 2 on if needed. Have had one for many many years and it still works well.

Thanks Ronnie for that pic....That heating element goes into a casting that is in the lower radiator hose---is that correct???? I think the Industrial White 4-80-17 is some different than the Oliver 1655--I could be wrong. On the White Industrial 4-80-17 there is a Big power steering pump unit that is built into a casting that is part of the 6 cylinder Waukesha diesel engine and that power steering pump unit completely covers the lower radiator hose area.
I also don't see where I can buy the --L--shaped casting that fits into the lower radiator hose that the 55.00 heating element screws into.
Appreciate all the help.... thank you len in cold michigan

The element goes into the bottom radiator casting. One your backhoe is there a place to just drill and tap a hole for this style heater in the lower radiator neck???

On my White 4-80-17 there isn't an --L---shaped part with a heating element inside. All I have is an --L--shaped hose. I will need to remove the hose to find the exact size, but a decent guess is the fitting coming out of the bottom of the radiator is 1 3/4.

If my engine is the same as the Oliver 1655 as far as radiator etc. I should be able to buy the complete unit.

This White 4-80-17 has a large power steering unit that covers that area down where the lower radiator hose is located. The unit is also part of a casting that is on the engine. Probably the farm tractor 1655 didn't have that big heavy duty power steering unit.
Thanks for all the help fellas. I am going to try and find the complete unit.
