1600 Stalling/ Manifold/Carb Question

So a guy asked about this on a 1650 a few days ago and I did what guys were recommending on there and richened up the fuel mixture which helped tremendously but I still dont think its 100% right. I know my manifold is shot but when I first got the tractor Korves didnt have new ones available yet, and finding a good used one was next to impossible. Well now that Korves is repopping them Im going to get new intake and exhaust manifolds coming for this thing to hopefully solve the problem. This does make a question arise for me though, when I rebuilt the motor in this thing I put a 283 kit in it but it still has the original carb. Would it be possible to put a carb off of a 1650 or 1655 on it to match the bigger displacement or were the carbs on the 50/55 any different to begin with?
 
What causes a gas engine to stumble is sometimes a faulty carb pre-heat mode of the intake manifold. If there is signs of icing, the cold intake runner is giving you a real lean mix. I.E. the cold increases the density of air and shoves the air/fuel ratio away from the ideal 14.7 to 1.

A somewhat smaller carb on a large engine will give you increased performance over the rpm range but can hurt the hp at WOT. The smaller size will enhance the velocity in the intake circuit making for better atomization.

If you have access to a SUN super-scope, (unsure of actual model) it will tell you what is actually going on and save the bad words for another day.

Just a thought, good luck. Sometimes an intermittent single plug misfire can be the issue.
 
First of all that was a problem with the 1600 in the winter time. Frost would form between the intake manifold and the carburetor. To correct the problem Oliver issued a kit that would help preheat the air which help solve the problem. You asked about the carburetor, does your tractor have the early 1600 or later 1600 carburetor? Do you have a 1600/1650 parts book? You will find that the carb castings are the same for both engines, only some of the inside parts change. Our customer who had the most problems (a dairy farmer) solved the problem by buying a diesel!
 
This tractor would still stall warmed up on a 90 degree summer day. It does ice the carb neck in the winter but it will still ice lightly/sweat up to around 60 degrees. It has never seemed to lack any horsepower it was just that initial hit when you let the clutch out and the governor calls for fuel that it would choke out. Never does it once under load. Ive been all through the ignition system before thinking that was initially the problem, new points, 2 new condensers, new cap, new rotor, new high output coil, new plug wires and 2 sets of plugs just to rule out a possible bad one. I know the manifold is bad because the plenum is all cracked up, and if its cracked on the outside ide be willing to bet its probably cracked on the inside so theres a possible vacuum leak involved here. I was just wondering if the 1650 used a different carb, or was jetted different to get the increased horsepower, or if they did most of it with the governor. If they are pretty much the same guess that answers that question though.
 
On my 1650 I couldn't hardly let the clutch out without it stumbling with a "cold" engine. After viewing a thread on carb icing on this site, someone posted a picture of a muffler with a heat shield and the heated air was then plumbed into the air intake pipe above the hood. I fabricated my own design and it makes a big difference. I have this muffler on the tractor from sometime in October to probably April. The rest of the year it has a normal muffler on.

I bet you found this picture. It's my uncle's 1650 and it iced up REALLY bad. Not good when you need to feed hay with it. This intake just drops over the muffler. That's why it doesn't have a rain cap. There is no need to alter the muffler. He just rolled a tube out of sheetmetal and welded a cap on the end with a hole that just fits over the muffler pipe. When cold weather arrives, he just takes the regular cap off the air cleaner and slides this one on.
