What do think of 1800A

What is your opinion of a 1961 Oliver 1800A gas tractor with out hydro power. Good reliable tractor? Any inherent problems I should look for when checking it out or that would be a reason not to buy it? I have an opportunity to buy one for $3700 and from the looks, it seems in good condition, but I have never owned a Oliver so I know nothing about what to look for.

Good on fuel! Now what options does it have? You asked about a tractor with a slow reverse for blowing snow. Have you thought of an IH hydrostatic unit? Your 1800 is almost 60 years old too!

It looks like a basic tractor with one remote and standard 6 speed 2 reverse and 15.5 x38 brand new tires. From the tractor data web site, low reverse is listed as 1.8 mph which should be low enough for snow blowing.

I'd like to have one just for a collector tractor, but that seems way overpriced unless it's real low hours and in exceptional shape. It's your money though, and being a gas without hydra power,it's probably bulletproof and would last you a lifetime.

What I think of an 1800A is I hate the dash and throttle! LOL The pto speed on the 1800 is going to be 540 at wide open, that helps dearly when under load, gives lots of torque so will be a good fit for blowing snow.

First thing I would do is drop a couple of cups of final drive oil in a bucket to check for metal. If there is metal and you still want the tractor drop the price by $2000. This will cover the cost of purchasing & shipping a replacement drive package.

It has been my experience that early 1800 & 1900 Oliver?s had huge heat treat issues on their bull gears along with wrong gear tooth angles, this combined with the relatively poor gear oil that was supplied made for some real issues as the tractors started to age. In my opinion, the Oliver Co was really hurting with having poor gear design engineers at this time.

I have over a dozen 1800-1950 Olivers. The 4 checkerboard models all had bad final drives. I have a line of replaced bull gears and related pinions racked in a line 6 feet long that have galled/spalled (sp) gear teeth. Some have actual missing teeth. The searching for good replacements has not been fun. A large stack of service bulletins helped the search. The replacements I found still aren?t perfect.

Sorry for my rant, these old 4-digits are beautiful tractors and I can?t stay away from them. I farm with a 1900B and 2255.

p.s. Another way the check for a bad LH bull gear is to look through the pto clutch adjustment opening.

Have you driven the tractor? Power steering was standard on 1800 rowcrop models. However these were hydraulic assist units and many of these units need some attention. A kit was available to update the m to full hydrostatic steering which ended that problem You should check if this one has been converted.

When I look through the pto clutch adjustment opening, what am I looking for? Can you tell it has a gear problem from driving it? If these 1800's are not a good tractor, what is your opinion on the 1650 and 1655 tractors? The reason I was looking at the this 1800A is because it didn't have hydro power.

If you want to run a snow blower, you'll love the hydra power. Don't confuse them with the problems that plagued the International torque amplifier or other brands two speed units at the time. I've got a 1550 with close to 10,000 hours on it and the HP has never been touched. It still works like new. Those units are pretty bulletproof. I didn't even get that many hours out of the two speed unit in a 4040 Deere Quad Range that I bought new.

Does the 1650 and 1655 models also have inherent problems with the bull gears and final drive train like the 1800 models?

(quoted from post at 20:19:54 01/06/18) I have a nice one for sale good metal avg tires 2350

Larryh,,,,,,I might be interested in your tractor at that price. Send me some photos and where you live? Does it have 38" rear tires? Hydro power transmission or straight 6 speed? Does it burn oil or have a problem with the bull gears?

I might be wrong, wouldn't be the first time, but I never knew of a problem in the 1550-1555-1600-1650 or 1655s.
