1850 PTO not working:update

Several months ago, I had the 1850 on a mixer wagon turning really hard. There was a grinding noise and the PTO wouldn't turn the shaft. The hydraulics still work.

Finally got it in the shop and pulled the PTO shaft today. The splines at the front are badly worn/damaged.

Is this likely the problem or do I need to look further? Do I need to replace the hub the shaft slides into?

Also, there are some wear/shiny spots on the shaft about 24" from the front end. What might have caused this or is it normal?

Thanks.
Dan

I would say your hydra-power does not line up with your the transmission. Does your tractor have a leveling bolt? It has been 41+ years, but I think there was a revision on the PTO hub that bolts in the flywheel. To start with see if you have a leveling bolt and post a serial number.

I just looked and it does not have a leveling bolt that I could see; definitely not like the one on my 1555.

Serial # 216628 - 557

Thanks, DAN

If that shaft wasn't turning you would not have hydraulics. Yes those splines are badly worn but they would have to be stripped to stop the shaft from turning. The early 1850s had a drive hub in the flywheel with torsion springs like found on a clutch disc. The later ones were just a solid cast hub. A machine shop can rebuild those splines. The shaft always wears quicker then the hub. If that was your problem your hydraulics would not work. If you have a two speed PTO check to make sure the detent bolt has not backed out allowing the shifter to partially disengage. Like J. said check the alignment of the hydra power.

I have the shaft for 90 plus shipping if you need it call link_disallowed ask for larry in fact I have all the 1850 pto parts

Something that Tim Smith told me about on those too,is the front engine mount. Those things wear bad and let the front of the engine drop down so they aren't running straight. He says more often than not, that's what causes them to go bad.
