1650 diesel oil pressure

Have 1650 when starts has 40-50 pressure when warms go to 10-15 at low rpms is this normal? It starts good and runs good does not seem to use oil has just under 4000 hrs. A guy told me I need to replace the main bearings my question is will this cause other problems? If I just do the mains?
I use 15-40 Delvac oil any thoughts?

On a tractor with that many hours its pretty normal. If it still carries 35+ lbs when closer to wide open you are fine. A lot of guys will tell you to run straight weight oil in them but if your bearings are shot running straight weight to get your oil pressure up is just putting a bandaid on the problem anyway. If there are no unusual noises coming from the bottom end keep her maintained and it will keep on doing its thing.

On a 1650 both worn mains and rod bearings will affect your oil pressure. What is the oil pressure when the engine is up to operating temperature? Have you taken an oil sample and have it sent in to see what foreign material may be in the oil from engine wear?

As JS says, there can be other reasons for lower oil pressure. Less likely, but possible, are a worn oil pump or a leaking pressure relief valve.

Plain bearings only need a few (5?) PSI to maintain an oil film between the metal surfaces. (but gallery pressure is not the same as at the extremities of the system, mind). You do not define low rpms, either. Do you mean idle or perhaps 1000, 1200, or 1500rpm?

Do check against the engine specifications before jumping to conclusions or listening (like "a guy told me") just because some nondescript thinks all engines are the same.

I just love how people react on this site. That is why I seldom post a question. I have not jumped to any conclusions. However it seems as though you have as you yourself I would consider as you put it a Nondescript I simply made the statement of a guy telling me this. If I would have taken it as the thing to do it would have already been done. That's why I asked before I did anything.
This site is slowly becoming a SOAP OPRA with ones like you who know it all. As far as I am concerned it is like a bunch of old maids with there nnalert in a bunch.

Thank You JS for a decent reply and good questions. Low idle say 1000 or lower 10-15psi. When warmed and say running a 9ft haybine about 20-25psi. With 15-40 Delvac I have had this tractor many yrs. I have noticed the oil pressure a little lower each yr. so was just curius of the nature of the beast so to say. I believe it is 1965 vintage with 283 Wauk again thanks for the idea about the oil sample I will try that.
