im looking at a 1979 2-85 tractor with 354 and was wondering if its the same 354 i have in my 1987 massey 850 combine.? any bad points in these tractors to watch for? tractor has 3000 hrs. and nice. nothing done to it.
sure nice sounding engines.

Both 354 cubes, but that is about as far as it goes. The 2-85 of that vintage will have a naturally aspirated 6.354.1, the 850 that new will have a T6.354.4, or an AT6.354.4. Not to say it couldn't be swapped in, but you would have to make many changes. Exhaust routing, coolant hose routing, oil filter placement. It's been done but it is not a drop in. Perkins engines are fairly inexpensive to overhaul unless the crank is wiped out. To get the correct internal parts for a Perkins you MUST have the engine serial/build number.

If you can find a nice one with low hours, grab it,no matter what you have to pay. They're a super nice tractor and it hard to find one that hasn't been used to death.

Like Ian said, you have to strip those engines pretty much down to the bare bones, but if you have the tractor engine,it's not a big deal at all. I put the engine out of a White 8700 combine in my Oliver 1850 diesel. It was just a matter of swapping over all the external engine parts. You use the block, crank, head and internal parts from the combine engine, but have to use the tractor oil pump and put it back together from there on out with the tractor parts.

the tractor has 3400 hrs. and is in super condition and has been kept shedded as can tell. has an allied loader on it in top condition. been looking for a loader tractor for hay bales for some time now and cant seam to find what i want. fwa would be nice but this tractor dont have it. i know international tractors but get nervous with others.i dont want a loader on my 1086 just because of the shifting. have heard these whites are tough. was just wondering how the engine stands up in the tractors as i have the 354 turbo one in my combine and like it. i understand this tractor dont have one. also wonder how the hydraulics hold out on these. the price seams to be right up there also at 17k canadian. thanks.

Hydraulics were good on them. They had a closed center system. The pump is right down on the side where it's easy to get to if by some stroke of real bad luck something went wrong with it,but at 3400 hours,I wouldn't give it a second thought. Those engines are great. If Oliver hadn't gone back to the Waukesha in the 1855s after having the Perkins in the 1850s,history might have been written a whole lot different. By the time they put it back in the 2-85s and 2-105s,it was too late, market share was gone.

I have a '76 model I bought used about 25 years ago. It is a go to, use it for everything tractor that never seems to break down. Last dynoed at 96 hp. Would love to have a twin for it, but I've been told I have too many already.
