1650 diesel exhaust leak or timing off?

Neighbor complains that excessive exhaust fumes are result of incorrect timing.Tractor skips on start up but gets better after warming up. I will check the timing and check for manifold leaks. Thoughts?

I'd suspect compression and/or timing. A bad injector won't work right either hot or cold, so if it gets better as engine heat rises, won't be an injector..

My 1650 diesel doesn't run real well when started cold. but always smooths out when ran a few minutes. It has always been like that.

MikeinKy ours did the same thing but after rebuilding injector pump it runs smooth all the time.We just put up with it for years but then tractor raced upon start up so pump had to get rebuilt.
