some Cockshutt questions

I have an early '46 E3, ser. 30-391 that has drum brakes. The 1946 parts book shows band brakes and I&T manual says they went to drum style at 10,001. I knew the original owner and once asked him if he had changed them. He said they were always drums. Can anyone shed some light, not a big deal but I'd like to know.
Second question. The E4 has a round cutout in the rear axle housing at the inner end. On mine, one cutout is up the other is down. I always thought it was clearance for mounted equipment and assumed some PO had worked on it and put one back upside down. But every one I've seen at shows is the same way. Somebody know why?

Mike I will take a stab at this and we will see what kind of responses it generates. ON the 30 my first question would be does it have 6 or 9 bolt rear hubs? My second question is does the tractor look original or do you note color differences? thirdly the tub frame, does it have a square hole in side for cultivator brackets and just to the rear of this is there a hole around 7/8 drilled on left side?
On the 40 the rear axels are inner changeable left and right. the cut out goes up on left side to make room for the 3 point lift cylinder the when flipped to the right it will be on bottom side. Irv

Thanks, Irv. I hadn't thought about the lift cylinder. It has 9-bolt hubs, Dad had it repainted red but I think it's mostly original except for the generator. You can see some orange in the pictures. There is some yellow showing on the rear end and the wheels were painted yellow. I have Dad's cultivators but he added the hydraulic that he got from a local guy. I drilled a hole in the tub when he put it on. I have a 1950 E3 that he bought new that has the hole. That tub is not as heavy as the earlier one.

well all the 46 use a 6 bolt rear hub and wheel center to match. If every thing from the intermediate box back looks correct and original then only one answer is logical. At one time or another the tub was frame was changed to a one with an earlier serial number. Some mite suggest it could have been a replacement tub but if the serial number stamping is original then that is unlikely. first band brakes were used till mid 48 up to serial num 10000. first shoe brakes were then used till late 50 to ser number 26200. next brake shoes were used from then till in 54 at ser number 36240. last were a enclosed car style shoe till end of production in 56. Irv

That's a possibility for sure. I just remembered my wife once told my one of her brothers hit a woodchuck hole and broke the front end off. I always assumed the pedestal broke but it could have been the tub. That was before I was in the family. There's an extra pedestal under a work bench in the shed.
