Cockshutt 525 having trouble running.

This one has me stumped. Had our 525 combine ready for harvest. The main belt let go so it sat a few days until the new belt came in. Put the new belt on and then it just plain would not start. Backfired then nothing. We never had a problem with this machine starting or running, in fact in run better then most of the tractors on the farm.

I have made sure the fuel line is clean. It has good gas in it and when disconnected at the carb, the fuel pump is obviously working. lots of fuel there. The plugs are sparking and I dont think timing is a problem because we never messed with any of it.

So any ideas. I dont really know much about the carb on these machines. It has the chrysler 251 industrial motor. Also where would be a good place to source a starter. In attempt to start it our weak starter seemed to give in.

Thanks in advance for all comments and help

Is there a chance that the distributor cap is cracked? That'd be the next thing I'd check. Sounds like the spark is jumping to the wrong post so the wrong plug is firing at a given time.

Here's another vote for a cracked (usually a carbon TRACK) distributor cap. A couple of weeks ago, my brother had a grain truck that started right up and moved it about two miles and shut it off. 10 minutes later, it wouldn't start and only backfired. It was a wet distributor cap. We didn't have any WD40 around, so we just took a rag, wiped the interior of the cap and it ran good after that.

I just had to change the one on the 1600 when the weather turned wet. It would start and run OK if I dried it out with a propane torch, but next morning it wouldn't start again. Drying it out was getting to be old news.

I appreciate the input. Didn't do much this week, had to finish getting the corn in the crib. Did drop the starter off to a local rebuild shop. Will try a new distributor cap when I put the starter back on. If that doesn't work I will look at the timing more in depth.
