770 oil pressure at start up

I just rebuilt my oliver 770 gas engine. I had one of the oliver Low work colored gauges in the side of the block. When turning over with the starter I could only get the gauge to flutter. Is it possible to get 10lbs. Pressure while cranking or should I pull start. I used a preluber that made the gauge bounce a little. 20psi into preluber I am concerned about having enough oil pressure at startup. What is the best way to get it started

It's hard to say since we were not in the engine and know what was done.
Assuming all bearing clearance are good and everything was lubed well I would pull it with the coil unhooked and fuel off to get oil flowing and to see if it builds pressure. Did it have pressure before it was rebuilt? The oil pressure relief spring can become weak and valve may be sticking also.

Yes oil pump had pressure before rebuild. I did not disassemble pump. I just washed in gas. Blew dry dunked in oil and it spurred oil out when turned with my fingers.
Relief valve is clean . 25 lb. Spring
Oil filter restrictor pipe in place.
Bearings plasticgauged at .0015
I have 2 gauges ordered with numbers on them starting with 10.
I am going to pull oil pan. Hook prelube at 20lbs and check oil flow.
The book says to pull start. That seems a little rough. I like the idea of spinning with starter with plugs out. I will work on it Friday AM Thanks everyone for your input.

I am thinking that those vane style pumps are low volume and that it takes a while to build up pressure.

Do you have oil coming out of the rocker arms when you turn it over? When I used to do this I would pour my last quart of oil that I needed to fill the pan over the rocker arms and push rods as they are the last items to receive oil from the pump. Remember the rods are not pressure fed, but did you put all of them in correctly? I take it this is a gas tractor. On a diesel once the fuel system was bled I would have oil pressure. More questions? E-mail is open.

I did have oil coming out of the rockers with the preluber. I did pour oil on the rockers too. Also there was a slight seep of oil around the head of the hollow head bolt. Is that ok? This is a gas engine. I am new to these posts so if I am not posting correctly please bear with me. Thanks

If you pre-lubed it good you should be fine! Remember those engine do not carry high oil pressure and if you have a very early 770 it will be lower yet.

I agree with J. Sounds like you got everything right and if you got oil up to your rockers I would start it up.

I started my 1964 770 yesterday. Oil pressure immediately went to 30 psi. I have a 0-30 gauge. Reading on gauge is all the way to 30. At idle it drops to about 20. I ran it for over an hour. I am using 10-30 oil. I was expecting to see about 25psi. I assume that psi. is determined by the pressure relief valve. I didn't change the spring or cup. These have always been in there. Cup works free in bore. Spring measures slightly over 2 inches. Anyone have similar results?

Do you want more pressure? That sounds great for a 770. I would have to look up specs. I'm sure J will be along to help soon..
