Z-splitting the 550 was easy. Lining up the driveshaft with the driven plate splines and pilot bearing while also lining up the PTO shaft splines isn't so easy, mainly because the driveshaft lays in the bottom of the PTO shaft tube, ie. it isn't centered in the PTO tube.
I made an alignment shaft which aligns the pilot bearing, driven plate, and pressure plate and used it for bolting the clutch back onto the flywheel. While fitting the tractor back together, I can feel the PTO splines engage but I am unable to engage the driveshaft splines into the driven plate.
As I understand them; the detailed instructions on splitting a 550 (located elsewhere on this site) state to put the pressure plate and driven plate on the shafts and them bolt the pressure plate to the flywheel after the tractor is back together. This can't be accomplished if you only Z-split the tractor; you'd have to take much more apart. Did I misread something? It wouldn't be the first time. If you guys have any tips, I'd sure appreciate them. Thanks.
