1655 over-under

Is it possible to replace the clutch release bearing tube with out taking the over-under hydraul-shift apart? Thanks.

Not really. You have to have the 3spd out anyways, so the only thing you would be avoiding was taking the front cover of the 3spd off, and pulling the input shaft out of the cover, that takes a total of about 10 minutes if you've never done it. The throw out bearing sleeve is press fit into the cover and I don't think you'd have a snowballs chance of getting the old one out and a new one pressed in unless the input shaft was out. Nothing on this end of the 3spd to be scared of, just takes a little patience and holding your tongue just right to get the clutch plates lined up so that the input shaft and front cover slide back in correctly. DO NOT use the bolts to force it back together, when it's right it slides right back in, when it doesn't slide right back in, start over, line the plates up and try again. Repeat until successful.

Mitch is right about re-assembly of the input shaft and clutch disks. Also check the input shaft for wear on the teeth that engage the clutch disks. If they have groves worn in them the disks will hang up and not shift properly. Its an expensive shaft so treat it with care. Make sure you use a new O-Ring behind the input shaft cover and a new O-Ring where the unit slips into the transmission housing. Be careful installing the unit back into the transmission also since if you damage that O-Ring it will leak and have to be pulled out to replace it. Not a small job.

If you want to see more images of the clutch disks and their alignment check out some of my back posts as I overhauled my over/under on my white 105. It will be similar to your three speed I would think. Mine was a mess. It was slipping in over drive as well as the sprag clutch was broken in half when I took it out and fell to pieces. Not cheap either. I replaced all the clutch disks, separator plates, input shaft and seals. It now shifts perfectly.

Best of luck with your project.
