12 Volt Conversion

What are the proper connections to change over a RowCrop 77 6 volt positive to 12 Volt GM Alternator with internal regulator? Just got an email advertising a complete changeover kit for $180 that looks like it does not use two wire connector at all just the heavy 12 Volt wire. Any help appreciated.

It is your money, but myself I would use the 3 wire instead of the single wire system. They work better at lower engine RPM"s. Just get an alternator at an auto parts store for an older Chevie pickup and some wire and terminals. There are wiring diagrams on this site. More questions? J.

A Delco 10SI will not fit under the side curtains of a 77, if you want it to fit, look for a Nipendenso (Denso) alternator from the mid 1980s.

That's odd since I have a 1950 77 with side curtains and it has a Delco 10SI on it and the curtains fit just fine

$180 for a kit that is crazy. You can buy a 3 WIRE Delco 10SI from O'Reilly's for around $45 plus a $10 core. One form a 1980 Chevy pick up with no power any thing no AC will work just fine. Then you need to 2 wire plug which they also have and it cost around $5. Then just a bit of wiring it up and your done. Shoot I can almost wire them up in my sleep but I have done a lot of 12 volt conversions

Where specifically do the three wires attach? Trying to put together a unit that has been converted but then all wires were removed for some unknown reason. Thanks.

Well if it is a 3 wire Delco 10SI you have the charge stud where you run a #10 wire to the amp gauge. Then you have the 2 wire plug. The #1 wire can go to the ignition side of the coil or to the ignition switch the side that goes to the coil. You may need a diode or resister like the O'Reilly's VR1 in line so you can shut the engine off. The #2 wire goes to the charge stud and that is all it takes to wire one up

You can also put an incandescent light (small indicator light) inline between the ignition terminal of the switch and the alternator to prevent feedback and also lower the voltage enough to make sure it charges correctly.

I would leave it 6-volt, if its not charging correctly repair it . if you chose to install
a alternator, you can send me your generator and I'll pay for the cost of the shipping.
