2-85 trans lube light

What should the transmission lube pressure be on a White 2-85? Neighbor has one that the light comes on when it it warmed up and at an idle. We thought we would check the prssure to confirm if the sender is ok. If it is low, what are the most likely causes? He just bought the tractor. It is low houred and appears to be well taken care of.

I'm sure somebody will know the actual pressure if you want to check it to make sure. I suppose I should do the same thing some day,but I don't know what I'd do about it,if anything,if it required a major overhaul of something that seems like such a small issue.

The cheapest and easiest thing you can try is to change the trans lube filter. Just a thought you know if the filter was plugged and happened to be restricting the oil before it gets to the sender. Many people don't no about that filter or if they do they haven't changed it in 20 years. Same filter as 3 speed. I think the books recommend every 200 hours the filter should be changed, but I can't remember for sure.

When I worked for the dealer we had a filter we drilled a hole in the top and then brazed a 1/4 inch pipe coupling to and added a pressure gauge so we could check the pressure. If you let the transmission in the low range neutral the low range gear is locked to the shaft where in the high range neutral the low range gear is running faster than the shaft and lubrication of that gear becomes a lot more critical! I guess I need to look up what the pressure specification is.

You said you changed the filter.   Have you looked at the new filter after running, does it have oil in it?   Run the tractor and loosen the filter, oil should come out, now you know if the pump is pumping oil or not working.

They run very low oil pressure.   As John said it only needs to get lube between the input shaft and the low range gear.   In 6th gear for example at WOT input shaft is turning 2200 RPM and low range gear is turning like 4200 RPM, need lube oil.

We had a new tractor that had an issue with the trans light coming on. I think it was the 2-105. The dealer had us pull the sensor out and said if oil pumped out with the tractor running it was probably the sensor. Replaced the sensor and never had another issue.
