4 Cylinder Diesel Parts Availabilty

So I have always wanted a 66 diesel wide front to match my 66 gas wide front. However I figured if I could ever find one I still wouldnt be able to afford it. Well, was making a walk through a salvage yard this afternoon looking for a pair of dual rims and came across a Super 55 diesel engine sitting in what was left of the tractor. All the major components are there its just missing some of the outlying paraphernalia like the air cleaner and what not. Didnt ask how much it would take to buy it but the whole drive home had the gears in my head turning thinking of making my own 66 diesel. Question is whats the parts availability for these motors as far as internals, bearings, pistons, sleeves, ect. Also the interchangeability of engine accessories like the air cleaner, fan, bell housing and all that between the diesel and the gas?

air cleaner and are diesel specific They will be hard to find bell housing needs to be from a diesel Super 55 diesel to 66 diesel will be alot of work unless you have a donor

The blocks are drilled the same for the plate the bell housing bolts to though. We went the other way one time and put a gas 66 engine in a Super 55 that was a diesel. About all the had to be changed was the manifold.

Luckily both manifolds were still on the engine and near as I could tell still fully intact. At the moment I'm just toying with the idea. I wanted to know what kind of work this little project could lead to and what parts were out there before I even went about trying to buy the motor.

I know it will be a project, that doesn't scare me. Ide rather have it that way so I can make some modifications to make the tractor what I want instead of ruining a legit 66 diesel.

One advantage of it being a Super it has the larger crankpins and 3.625 sleeves and pistons are what are available so that crank will handle it. Don't turn it over till you check the pump!

Shoot, didn't even think about the fact that the 55's use a different manifold than the 66's. If I decide to tackle this thing I will definetly keep you in mind.

What kind of horsepower would that motor be able to make and still be able to have a tractor that could be used for field work?

Well it would be more than what a Super 55/66 had but less than a 550 with the big engine or a 660 Those engines have heads with larger valves.
