Oliver 1800 won't turn left

Looking for some suggestions as to why my 1800a won't turn left when not moving. Recently took to a mechanic that works on a lot of olivers and had the gemmer power steering unit replaced with a salvaged one. It will turn easily to the right but not to the left when not moving. The old unit would turn both directions but leaked terribly and the steering shaft was stripped so both were replaced. Correct me if I am wrong but I should be able to turn it both directions while it is stationary. Any help will be appreciated

Hi Spade 316,

We have many parts on stock here for the Gemmer PS Head used on late 770, 880, and 1800A and B series tractors and all COCKSHUTT Built 550, 560, 570, & 570Super tractors with the Gemmer PS option.

Following are a few possibilities:

The head unit may not be correctly installed on to your vertical shaft The sector gear may be running out of motion on your left turn and may have more motion to go when turning right..........remove the unit, turn the wheels some and re install.

Are you sure that you have all the air out of the system. Do a bunch of figure 8's to purge the air.

There may be dirt in the external control valve. Remove ,dissemble and clean it and install an try again.

There is a steel shoulder bushing that may have the shoulder broken off due to hitting a dead furrow. This is inside the head.

One of your internal pressure directional control seals may have failed.

Please email or call whe I can assist you further.

Also wanted to add when the axle is jacked up and front wheels are lifted off the ground it will turn both ways. The mechanic is going to check with the salvage yard and see about the unit that was used.

Can someone confirm that the wheels should turn both directions fairly easily with this type of power steering?

They won't turn to the left at all when starting at center with the tractors weight on them, after turning all the way to the right easily they can be turned to the left to the straight position with ALOT of effort then won't turn any further.

Ill keep this posted updated if a solution is found in case someone else has a similar issue

They should turn both directions easy yes. I looked at 1600 on a neighbors estate auction in June. A friend had warned me that when he drove it hauling silage,he had to keep turning the steering wheel to the left to keep it going straight. When I got on it and tried it,it turned right both moving and sitting still, but to the left,it would only turn while moving.

You 2 are talking about 2 different types of power steering units here!. On the 1800, take the 1/4 inch pipe plug out of the test port on the flow divider and install a 1000 PSI pressure gauge in that port. Turn the wheels in both directions and see what the pressures are. How much lost motion do you have when you turn the steering wheel before it moves the front wheels? I think I would have spent the money and put a hydrostatic unit off of a salvage unit on the tractor. I never would have put that unit on without removing. the end where the control valve attaches. Have you every had one of those units apart? I can echo some of Phil's comments!

I am trusting that the mechanic I am using will be able to fix it. The option of installing a different type of unit never came up but sounds like it would have been a better idea. For now I have to stick with what I have. The steering wheel will turn about 5 inches freely before the tires begin to turn. I will politely mention the suggestions above to him. I don't want to come across as telling him how to do his job though. I just want it to work correctly. Thanks for your help

Here's an image of the unit that was installed recently.

google...how does a power steering pump work. Won't tell you what's wrong but it will
help understand what should be happening and what could be the problem.

Keep in mind the last one leaked...the why it failed could be what's wrong now.

Follow up for steering. Ended up sending the original steering unit to a guy in Ohio that rebuilt it. The rebuilt unit works. No leaks and steers both directions. The mechanic I was using said the salvage yard units were going to cost $500-600, was sent two and neither worked. Mechanic said he was able to return them. My rebuilt unit that works perfect now, cost around $850. I'm happy with the work and wish I would have sent it too him first. Thanks to Phil for the contact info to get rebuild done.
