Oliver 2655 Detroit Repower

Hey guys, I understand that there are a few Oliver 2655's running around with various detroit engines stuffed in them. Does anyone happen to know how much luck they had with an inline 6-71 repower? Or better yet does anyone have pictures of such a thing? Thanks in advance!

There were a few factory built with the 800 cubic inch LP engine.   Those tractors had low gear locked out.   The transmission was originally designed for the Minneapolis Moline M 670 tractor, it's a spur gear design.   The input shaft is hollow (for the live PTO shaft in the M 670) in your tractor.   The tractors with the 800 engines had a solid input shaft.   Of course the shaft was available through repair parts 40 years ago.
Good luck with putting a lot more horsepower in front of that transmission.

I have to question why you would even consider a Detroit 2 stroke in it when there are so many good 4 stroke dsl. engines available. How about an 8.3 ltr. CDC (Cummins) or a 504 Case?

Here is mine with a 6-71 non-turbo Detroit. I have not used it for any heavy work yet cause it needs some TLC yet. On the Detroit Diesel group that I'm in on Facebook there is a fella with a 2655 that they repowered with a 8V71 Detroit. I can't remember if they used the factory trans or not but they use it for plowing and they been using it for 20 years or more.

Anybody remember what was in this one? I'm sure somebody said at one time, but I don't remember.

I don't think anybody would like the 8.3l. It will have less low end power than the Detroit. I'm kind of partial to a two stroke. Is there a drive shaft between the trans and rear end on those? I'm just curious what else you could use for a trans. I think an 855 would be a great conversion myself but you would have to turn it down to appropriate HP. These are all just theoretical opinions.

I've heard this debate before and thanks to uncle Sam I've probably run more Detroit's than most anybody. It still has a better torque curve than an 8.3 in that heavy an application. Not that an 8.3 is a bad engine you're just trying to put a Briggs and Stratton in a Peter built. You're going to have to run both the same way to get them to do anything but you'll burn up the 8.3 because its under powered.

I'm thinking that it will have no lug. The bottom end power of a 585 or 504 (i dont remember which a 2655 had) is much better than an 8.3. Top end do OK but also thanks to the us gov I'm here to tell you if you set an 855 at 220 hp and an 8.3 at 220 HP the 855 will run away from the 8.3. Once you get to governed speed they are about the same but if you have to get something big moving there's a lot better choices than an 8.3. Honestly the I6-71 would probably do a better job but for the money and effort if you want a Cummins I would say an 855 would be easier because of its similar size to an mm 6 cylinder out power an 8.3 and be as cheap if not cheaper to get. But what you're getting at yes the rated load an 8.3 is capable of 200 HP easily.

We used to own an A4T with an 800 in it and I don't remember low gear being locked out in it. Mine was a factory built tractor too.
