Cockshutt 560 for J Schiebert

Hi J remember the 560 here in the UK we talked about several years ago, well I have now located it. I new it went to a tractor dealer but then lost track of it. Recently I was talking to a tractor resterator friend and I kew he was into Cockshutt tractors and I told him the story I posted on here. He knew the tractor dealer who bought the 560 and he told who he had sold it to and my friend tracked him down and he went last week to look at the tractor. It is fitted with the Perkins 6-354 engine as fitted by Perkins at peterborough then it went to a farm in Lincolnshire and thats were I saw it working. The serial number is stamped on the left side of the engine frame casting and it is 560 CM1429D. The only drawback is the owner is not very co-operative and will not sell it at this time and will not sell it along with his yard full of other tractors all deterating in open sheds and stood outside. This post is real exciting to me. This is the 429th 560 built in the first year (1958) of the 560 with the Perkins L4 engine.

Starting with the 1959 production year at Tractor Serial Number CN5001, the 560 used the upgraded 4.270 direct injection Perkins engine until Cockshutt's production of tractors in Brantford, ON ended...........!

We probably will never know for sure, but according to the timing, it seems like this was Cockshutt's early planning and start of the "580" Project!!!

You said he would not cooperate enough to sell it, but would he cooperate enough that you could take a bunch of photos of it, perhaps that could be printed in a Cockshutt publication? I think it would make a good story and there would be a lot of interest in it, even if it is in poor condition.

You made my day! If you get a chance look at the engine serial number as well. The engine serial number is stamped by the injection pump and the first number will be an 8 followed by some zero's. Also look at the injection pump plate and see at what RPM the engine was set to run. Thanks. My e-mail is open. J.

A friend thought the 580 had a planetary rear end instead of bull gears. Anyone know for sure? I understand the 580 did have a 354.

The one you see at shows does not have a planetary final drive. The engine is also one of the first 350 Perkins 354 engines built. The first time I looked at the 580 was at a show and I was there to see the show and then pickup my 5 year old gran-daughter and she is now a junior in college so I have forgotten some things about the tractor.

The Cockshutt Engineering Dept.had several proto-type planetary rear end/2 speed trans./wet brake units under development on test stands for the COCKSHUTT "580" tractor in early 1962 when the new ownership/management moved into the Brantford, Ontario plant headquarter.

While, the above development was being completed, several proto-type "580 tractors" with the front end changes complete, were already in the field for testing that were fitted with the 354 Perkins engine in place of the Hercules DD339 engine. These also used the Sheppard built power steering system in place of the Gemmer built power steering. The trans./rear end on these several tractors were the same as the 570S.

The only "580" (with the 570S rear/trans.) was found and restored by Andy Appelfeller. The tractor (with a Cockshutt 290 5 plow bottom plow) is currently owned by the Albaugh families and Paul Summers, jr., residing in Maryland. This tractor was featured in the 2004 (??) Dupont Classic Tractor Calendar.

After a discussion with Michael I found we were both looking for the same tractor . I have known of this cockshutt tractor fitted with a Perkins 6 354 tractor for over twenty years but lost track of it. Last winter after a bit of detective work I found it still existed and the owner let me see it this summer. The tractor is badged as 560 with the serial number as in a previous comment with an adjustable wide front end, shell fenders 34 inch rear wheels and feather light power steering.The back end of the tractor looks the same as as my cockshutt 40 PD. I managed to take a few photos.
This is my first time on a forum.

Dropping the Gemmer would have been no loss. We had one in an 1800B Oliver when I was a kid and never could get it to stop leaking. One thing is for sure. Cockshutt knew how to build a durable rearend.

I have actually rebuilt a couple of the Gemmers with parts I got from Phil and they have done very well so far. They sure beat no PS at all.

In your travels in the Oliver World, did you ever come across a very early 1850 with "blue paint" under the green on the Perkins 354 engine??

A COCKSHUTT CLUB member, Tom Bitters, WI talked to a former Cockshutt plant employee at our COCKSHUTT Club's Big Show in Canada in year 1993. The former employee, told Tom that there were several hundred Perkins 354 engines painted "Ford blue" on the receiving docks at the Cockshutt Brantford, ON CANADA Plant in 1962 when the NEW OWNERSHIP arrived to take over. These engines were intended for the under development COCKSHUTT 580 tractor. The story is that Perkins built these engines for a new European built Ford truck and Ford cancelled the Perkins 354 engine deal in favor of using a Ford built engine, so Cockshutt bought them.

The NEW COCKSHUTT ownership, while destroying the few 580 proto type trans.rear end assemblies,............. immediately had these "blue" 354 engines shipped to the Oliver Charles City Plant, presumably for the Oliver 1850 tractor.

I find this very interesting and wonder if you or others would have something to add to this.
