1550 engine question

I was using my Oliver 1550 to cut my pasture and it worked
fine for the first 2 hours and was pulling pretty hard since the
grass was tall, but then all of a sudden it started making a very
loud high pitched noise as the engine sucked in air. I stopped
and let it cool down for several hours. All the gauges showed
normal conditions and the oil is full and clean. Any thoughts
as to what the problem might be or where I should start
troubleshooting?

It is the gas model. Thanks for the quick responses. I will check the air cleaner and radiator screen.

Upon closer inspection, there is a hole under one of the spark plugs that is sucking in air? What would cause this and how severe do you think the damage is?

Looks like somebody put adaptors so they could use 14mm auto sparkplugs rather than the 18mm (D16, 386) original plugs.

That would make sense, but what would cause the adapter to burst and how can I remove it without leaving the threaded portion in the spark plug hole?

Mine gave me fits for a while when it'd get warm, but it would only miss on one cylinder. As far as I could figure, there was a valve that had some carbon on a stem that would swell with the heat and start to stick. I worked the snot out of it and got it cleaned out.

hopefully it didn't suck in what filled the hole or it was big enough to not get
caught between the cylinder and wall, or damage a valve.

Pull the plug, put a magnetic stick in there and try and find all the particles. If
there is a reducer replace it but be very careful not to drop anything in that
hole.

Hate to say it, the head should be pulled and repaired and hopefully you didn't
damage the cylinder and wall. Just the breaks when buying old equipment, some keep
going and some don't without an investment. Check the cost of the repair compared
to the tractor...parts get a good price.

It looks like the plug adapter just separated and I stopped as soon as the loud sound started when it broke. I ordered a good set of screw extractors and will heat it and add PB Blaster before trying to remove the broken plug adapter. Thanks for also suggesting I put a magnet down the hole in case any fragments fell into the spark plug hole. At some point the engine and head should be rebuilt since it has 4800 hours, but hopefully this didn't cause any major damage.

Agree with Gary. For sure pull the head off and do it correct.
Hopefully all it will cost u is a head gasket. Sucks but.....
Great tractor

(quoted from post at 07:56:46 09/02/17) Looks to me like the adaptor just split. Is the plug still straight on the adaptor? Looks like it's leaning toward the head a little.

Yes, the adapter split and the spark plug is leaning towards the head now.

I got the no foul adapter and spark plug out, checked that no debris fell into the hole using a flexible inspection camera, and replaced all the spark plugs with Autolite 3116s. It runs good again. Thanks for all the input!

(quoted from post at 08:56:27 09/14/17) Cool. Those inspection cameras sure come in handy, I would like to get one. Which do you have?

I have one from Harbor Frieght that works decent for short distances and a 50' one that connects to a laptop from Amazon: Qyuhe 2Million Pixels HD USB Endoscope Borescope Waterproof Portable Inspection Snake Camera with 6LED Lights (49.2ft)

The 50' one helped me pinpoint a plumbing issue in one of my walls in my house. The house settled and cracked a vent pipe coupling. They are both very useful.

Another reason to make them even more handy. I'm just waiting for the bubba plumbing I did last winter to spring a leak. Thanks!
