1550 cracked PTO Cover

I have an Oliver 1550 with a crack in the PTO cover. Is it safe to use it if the cover is cracked, or should I get it replaced? Assuming it needs to be replaced, how hard is it to change?

I am guessing you have a 1550 with the optional single speed PTO. If so a cover off of a 1600 will also work. You can change it in less than 1/2 hour. You can use the PTO, More questions?

No real danger probably, but you can get somebody to grind it in and weld it with nickel rod if you don't weld yourself. I've seen them with a big chunk broken right out from the center link dropping down and hitting them.

Mine came with a hole in it. The seal in front of the clutch was bad and it was full of sludge and dirt. I suppose one day I'll weld a patch on it but it's no real problem.

Thanks for the responses. I will use it as-is today and start
looking for a replacement, or find some nickel rod. What
material is the cover in case I weld it myself?

cast needs to be pre-heated before you start welding, then needs to be buried in floor dry (anyways that's what I use)to cool it slowly
