I am trying to change the bearing on the PTO shaft. I have removed the retainer and I cannot get the shaft to come out. What else needs to happen to get the shaft to come out?

There is nothing other than the large retainer ring holding it in. Some times you can put the front section of a pto shaft from a piece of your equipment on it to give you some more leverage. Ours have been swapped between 540 to 1000 so many times they practically fall out.

The bearing on the PTO stub shaft is not meant to hold back the oil. There are two seals inside the PTO unit that could be leaking oil into that cavity. One is on the driven shaft and the other is on the safety plunger. The PTO unit must be torn apart to get to either one. When you remove the stub shaft look in the cavity you should be able to see if the oil is coming from around the outside of the output shaft or from the inside of that shaft. As far as getting the bearing off on one end there are two snap rings one is a regular flat ring with holes in it to facilitate removal once you remove that there is a round one that has to be removed also. Generally that bearing is a very tight fit on the shaft.
