upper 3 pt shaft question on 4-150

What started as a pto rebuild turned into more work when we found the trany gear lube change loose and rubbing against a line. So now we are removing the hydraulic unit to tidy up this problem and install a new chain. The issue we are having is that as we try to slide the upper shaft to the left, it seems to hit or hang up on something. On our older Olivers ie 2255, we were able to do this and avoid removing the hydraulic control blocks on the right to get the bolt out that is under the shaft. Did they change something on the Whites were this little trick no longer works? Did they install needle bearings and we are possibly hanging up on a bad bearing. The shaft seems to have some play on the right side. I thought they had bushings in there. Any help would be appreciated. Any other tricks would also be appreciated. Seems like this is getting to be a much bigger job than we originally thought. On the other hand, it was probably a good thing we spotted the chain problem at this time.

thanks

If you really want to, I think you can change the chain from PTO opening. I have not done this, but when I put my last one, I had the top of for extensive transmission repairs. I checked to see if I could reach from the rear. I felt I could, and would definitely try. My plan was to put a rag on the sprockets and spin the sprocknut of the drive shaft. Then use long shaft to unscrew the nut. I would reverse for assembly.
As far as removing the bolt under the arm. By shaft wouldn't budge. I actually got the bolt out anyway. I cut a 3/4 socket very short, and with a piece of keystock and box end wrench got the bolt out. Good luck.
