1650 rear tire size

Just got a 1650 gas to add to our line up from my wifes family estate in Ohio. Rear tires are shot , actually one went flat when we pulled it on the trailer. I would like to eventually do some tractor pulling with this one and was thinking of looking for pressed steel wheels. So If I do that I have the opportunity to go with what ever size. So for tractor pulling what would you all recommend ? thanks any input would be appreciated. Currently 15.5 38

I am running 18.4x38 on my 1650, but it is a diesel turned up. I don't think you would have enough power to run that big of a tire on a gasser. Here is a couple of pictures of it.

Prior to picking it up I was contemplating playing music chairs with some of the other tractors we have and making this one diesel. but it the gas motor runs really well and found out Father in law rebuilt the bottom end just prior to him stopping farming some years ago. So I think I will leave it alone and stay Gas on it. Would 18.4 34 be better than 15.5 38 ?

Probably better of with the 15.5's. The 18.4x34 has a lot larger OD dia. then a 15.5. Bigger tires are not always the answer when you pull, you have to have enough power to run them. I learned the hard way on another tractor. We are making 2 classes in our 7,500# barn yard pulls, Gas and diesel. 99% of the time the gassers cannot be competitive against diesels in the heavier classes in the barn yard stock pulls.

looks like 18.4*34 are 4" larger OD than 15.5*38 was going to ask about 16.9*38 but they look to be about the same OD as the 34. 16.9*34 look to be about the same height but with extra width.

Can you remove the cast centers and replace them with pressed steel and re- use the rim itself , or would I need to replace the whole unit ?

The rim on a pressed steel is a one piece center and rim welded together. The 9 bolt pressed steel will bolt right onto your axle hub.

Yeah, I had called a guy that sells rims and tires, and he has repaired some of my rims in the past. And he said he had pressed steel wheels , but they were not put together. So was figuring he welds in the center at his shop. So was wondering if I could buy the centers and have them welded into my rims in place of the cast centers and save a few bucks.

First thing you want to do is get rules where you plan to pull or you will end up buying tires you cant use! I think 16.9 38s look the best but 18.4 38s will prolly pull better if you can use them and you have the power to turn them.

Richlandfarm, My 1650 gas has 16.9 38's. Drove it to a local tractor pull won in the 7500! My daughter posted a video on YouTube under 2012 Oliver 1650 tractor pull. I have pulled a 4 bottom plow in heavy clay soil and traction wasn't an issue. Tires are Stomil Radials and the frame and rear end are 1555.

Thank you everyone for your input. I think I am leaning toward the 16.9*38 There is pull coming up at the end of the month. I think I am going to rob tires and wheels off of my 770(15.5-38) for right now to get an idea of it weight and everything. to decide if I should invest in pressed steel wheels, and concentrate on a pulling hitch for right now.

Is there any input on that? have a few ideas but that is it for now. I know the rule here is max height of 20" and ideally 18" back center of axle. I do not see that length would be possible with out removing the PTO.

Greg,
Thanks, I think you have me sold on 16.9*38's My father had a 1650 when I was a kid and it had 16.9 but it was diesel. So I wasn't sure. What gear did you run ? I have never pulled before and hope to make this local pull.

Richlandfarm, I was in 2nd. The original engine for the 1555 had a bent rod and I had put a 1650 diesel engine out of my industrial loader in it around 1991. That video on YouTube is Oliver 1650 Walton Fair tractor pull. You can see me pull back on the throttle trying not to spin out and tire size was 15 5 38. Got to go milk now be back around 7.

the 18.4x34 would be a good choice, I think 16.9x34 would be the right size for that tractor and Firestone field and road (151) are a good choice for pulling. Chuck

Too late now, that is what is on her, After fact I should have went with 18.4 34 due to the fact that I could have taken tires off one of our New Hollands that gets more use and put new ones on it. But by measurements 16.9 38 don't differ that much from 18.4 34

They are Firestone all trac,
