1850 diesel compression

Hi

My 1850 has been hard to start cold lately. I am wondering how many psi the compression should be?

Thanks
Lloyd

I can look it up but 400 PSI would be good. Do you have a compression tester for a diesel? Maybe you should do a "poor man's" compression test or a cylinder leak down test first. I see on the Deere site a man wanted to check his John Deere and he found that the compression tester was $500.00!

Yes I have a compression tester. I have tested one cylinder. It tested 300psi. Seems some places say over 250 is fine. some talk about 400. If 250 is fine, then I am good. If it should be 400. I need to go looking for the cause of the low compression.

Right now it is hard starting, and produces very little smoke regardless of the fuel setting. I am trying to determine if it is a compression issue or a fuel issue.

Thanks

When you take the exhaust manifold off do you get white smoke out of any of those ports? How many hours on the tractor? I can probably look up the compression for you but 250 is not going to make for good starting and neither is 300.
