In the process of slowly rehabbing the Oliver 550 Gas, 12V negative ground that I purchased over a year ago. The Tractor had been sitting in the neighbors field for about eight years before I convinced him to sell it to me. Based on the serial # 162-278-019 I'm guessing it's about 1964-65? I rebuilt the carburetor, replaced plugs, wires, points, condenser and battery. Drained all the fluids and replaced them. The engine runs fairly well but the tractor needs a lot of TLC. The battery would not keep a charge, just took the generator to the local electrical repair shop, it's dead, needs to be rebuilt. The rear PTO will not shut off. I've read about and been told about it "snapping" into place but nothing happens when I move the handle. The Clutch handle on my tractor is forward of the brake peddles on the right side. If I hold it forward real hard it will stop. The spring is missing from the handle that hold the plunger up and the bracket that holds it forward seems to be missing a piece to hold it in place.
So is this an adjustment issue or do I need to look at replacing parts to the PTO clutch? Also, where might I find springs and bracket parts for the PTO lever? Another issue is when I put it into 4th gear I get a banging noise like maybe it's missing some teeth on that gear, so obviously I don't run in that gear.I plan on beginning to tear it down this fall/winter, assume I will have to do a Z split.
Any help you folks can give will be greatly appreciated.
