White 2-85 trans issues

Got a buddy with a 2-85 that has transmission issues, acts like it's in 2 gears at once. Start it up with clutch pushed in & all ok,but if you let the clutch out it stalls the tractor. It can be pulled around not running & won't skid wheels, rolls easy. He said he was just disking one day & it started to labor & just pulled down. Said he pushed in clutch & that's when it acted like stuck in 2 gears. I've had very little experience around Whites & any help would be great. TIA.

If it were stuck in two gears it should not tow around with the wheels turning freely. Maybe a bearing gone out. Time to pull the transmission cover off and have a look inside. If he can do his own wrenching it may not cost that much to fix.

Most likely problem is the low range gear on the input shaft. Yes you can tow it because none of the gears on the pinion shaft are turning in neutral.

As John suggested more than likely the low range gear has seized to the input shaft.   Shift the transmission to 1st gear and see if it will drive under it's own power.   It should be driveable in any of the low range gears. If it is not driveable in 1st gear get back to us for further diagnosis.

The input shaft and low range gear is lubricated by a pump that is chain driven from a gear that is on the back side of the input shaft.   More than likely the chain has failed, thus no lubrication.   Late production had a warning light on the dash that came on should lubrication cease.   There was a package to install the warning system on earlier tractors.

Ok, I will let him know & try that. He is away for couple weeks now, but can look at it once he's back. Thanx again for all the replies.

Update on the 2-85. He was home this week, started it up & told me if range lever is in neutral it can sit & run with clutch out. If he puts into hi or low range & lets out clutch, it stalls the engine. Now I've not been to see this tractor, I'm just going on what I've been told. Hopefully this helps you guys, thanx again.
