500 battery location and alternator?

The previous owner of my 500 had relocated the batteries from along the seat to a "tray" bolted to the frame on the right side of the tractor. I'm considering removing that tray to get back to a more original look. Not sure I want them back along the seat though as that was the cause of major fender corrosion on the tractor. Anyone locate a battery in the "dead" space in front of the radiator? Not much room for one, but it looks like a Corvair battery might fit.

Also the generator was replaced with a GM alternator. Despite the loss of original condition, I think I'll stay with it. Anyone with thoughts about that?

All this was done at least 30 years ago as I've owned it now for 28 years.

The newer 990 DBs did have the battery up front like you said. The curve of the grill might have you shopping for one the right size and shape, but no doubt you can make it work. I'm kind of a fanatic when it comes to not putting alternators on these older tractors, but if you'll at least paint it green so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb,I wouldn't slap you up back of the head if I saw it. lol

That's interesting about the 990.

There are 12V lithium batteries that are for automotive use that are quite small except for price. One I saw with enough ummph to crank a diesel (though mine starts very easily) cost ~$500.

Got it! Green it will be. The previous owner also removed the original voltage regulator when removing the generator and I did not get either of them. So to convert back to the generator would have to buy both items.
