88 radiator fan

The fan has been dangerously close to the generator on my 88 since I've owned it. One blade started hitting end of the generator shaft (armature) the other day. When I investigated it I found a cracked blade so I got a new fan. The blades on the new fan come 1/16" from the end of the end of the genny shaft, way too close for comfort. is there supposed to be a spacer between the fan and water pump hub on this thing? The stub in the middle of the fan hub sticks out a good 1/2" beyond the water pump hub when the fan is installed. It just looks to me like it should have a spacer in there. Thanks. Jim

Here's a pic. It seems to me the fan should
be farther inside the shroud too.

Is this a Fleetline or a Super 88?Super 88 & Fleetline 88 tractors do not use the same brackets to mount the generator + a Fleetline 88 will have 2 belts. Do some looking at your generator mounting brackets, Also I wonder if the drive hub is positioned at the correct location on the bearing.

This is a fleetline with one belt. ser 133444C which translates to 1951. The wrong hub positioning sounds logical. There is a lot of water pump shaft sticking out beyond the hub. The belt does seem to line up OK. I have an 88 owner's manual for an 88 other than this one. That manual shows a separate generator belt coming off the water pump. There must be a difference? Serial number break?

OK, since I am working with a 'frankentractor' I figured I have to make the best of it. I found a piece of 3/8 aluminum and made a spacer. It works as close to perfect as a person can get. The outside of the fan center surface is recessed from the end of the hub pilot by a few thousanths. Previously about 3/4" of the fan blades was outside of the fan housing. Now the fan is farther inside the fan housing where it should be. Thanks for he information J. Now my curiosity is up about what had been done to this tractor during the 46 years before I became the owner.
