Engine suddenly shuts off

Hello all, I'm having issues with my 1949 Oliver 77. In the past I've usually find answers by simply doing a search for a problem. This time I'm stumped. Like I stated I have a 1949 Oliver 77. No matter the weather cold or hot, working the tractor or at an idle the tractor will just die. If I'm quick enough I can simple reach up and turn the ignition/light switch to the off position or to another position and the tractor will start right back up. If I can't do that I just hit the starter and it will start. When I got the tractor it had been semi restored except for a few electrical components. Since then I've replaced some old wiring, added new gauges, a new ignition/light switch, new coil, carburetor work and new battery cables. I can't find any loose wires or bad connections. The only thing that I have not messed with it the electronic ignition. I've been told these are either working or not working. I've had it a couple of years and can't seem to pin point my problem. Thanks Brett

To me that sounds like a glitch in the E.I. and if it is it will sooner or latter get worse

Hi Brett, looks like the old gremlin is still there. I would think a good Cockshutt guy would help you get out of the Oliver business. Like we have talked those electrical issues are hard to find, until they just quit completely.

Hey Dave, I thought I had figured it out but it popped its head up again. The E/I module is the last thing to try. I've always heard and thought that the electronic ignition either worked or it didn't. Guess I'm bout to find out. I'll post either way once I find out what it is. I'll tell ya what, this problem just about got me thinking of trading for a good Cockshutt.

I'd say it's the switch...you got a bad replacement.

I had that problem...it was the coil wire coming loose.

My 1550 did the same thing and I thought it was the wiring.....turned out to be the condenser. it was shorting out and robbing my ignition voltage

tbird,
I have seen condensers fail and a good tune up took care of everything. Thing is I don't have a condenser and points, I have electronic ignition. I haven't got to it yet but I think I'm going to change out the switch and see if this fixes the problems. Thanks for the response anyway.
