The 500's coming along

I shot some green paint today. I'm having fits trying to get the last dimples out of the grill. I just put some new Bondo in it. I'll get that sanded down and see where I am on it. I want it done for a local show on the 28th. I just might get there yet.

Nice! I have a 500 too and am starting to fix it up a bit. Not too pretty though as it is still my only mowing, log towing, multi-purpose machine.

If I may ask, how does the original grille attach at the bottom? I'm going to have to fab my own grille. I can see how the top is a kind of snap-in stud, but wonder how the bottom went.

Also do you have a source for the hood decals for a 500? I looked at oliverdecals.com but did not see any 500 stuff and have not gotten around to calling them yet

I got my decals from DuMonts at oliverdecals dot com. I called and had him make them. JWondergem was going out there,so he brought them home to me.

That insert had two pieces of strap iron tack welded at the bottom with a tab on them that slides down over the edge of two of the square holes. Because mine was caved in so bad that they were using the front of the frame for a toolbox,I've had to do some grinding to get it to fit anywhere near respectable and had to drill a small hole in each corner so I can put small bolts in it to pull it around tight.

Looking good,
Can you say help GLENNSTER ?
Might be up that way chasing bees ???*?
Yer phreind,
Jim

I'll give them a call in the near future.

Mines a diesel and late in the 1963 production (s/n101937). It seems like the hood details are quite a bit different than yours. There is a bracket at the bottom of the grille opening with 4 round holes in it. I'm thinking I'll push a rubber grommet in the outermost holes and when I make the grille I'll have a couple posts that will slip into the grommets and then use the "snap" catch thing that's at the top of the grille opening. I need to find some better pictures of an original grille so I can see how close a copy I can make.

I also have to make the hinged cover for the radiator cap. I'm wrangling over machining a die to form the flange on a sheetmetal blank or just welding a rod around the edge of an oval blank.

I ended up getting a new radiator cap door out of England. Got a new steering wheel, tach cable, tach, voltage regulator, light switch, maybe a few other odds and ends. Cost me $95 shipping on it,but I got it. The hood itself is different on a gas. They had louvers and the diesels didn't. There were a lot of differences between the early and late models,so no doubt they made some improvements to the grill insert too.

Did you go through http://www.davidbrownparts.com/? I've seen where they list fenders, battery box, running lights etc..

I'll end up making a new battery box, but the fenders are pretty bad and one of the fender braces is toast. The fenders could be patched, but that brace is a pretty complex bit of sheetmetal to form.

That might have been the site. I know it was David Brown Parts Ltd. You might check with Yesterday's tractors. Most of those parts I got were Sparex, and YT was a Sparex dealer last I knew. If not,try Rick at ricksagparts dot com. I got a hydraulic pump from him last month for my Fiat built 1365 and that came from Sparex.

I had this cross box made. He built the covers and fender braces too. It all looks absolutely factory perfect. He cut the left fender out all the way up to the top rib and put new piece in there too, along with putting the radiator cap cover in for me. The whole thing cost me $850. Can't beat that deal with a stick. I just wish his health hadn't gone bad before he could finish the rest of the body work and painting.

I got it pretty well wrapped up yesterday. Everything's painted now but the hood. I painted the white parts, now I have to wait for the grill and the little white stripe at the back of the hood to dry enough to mask them off so I can paint the green on the hood.

She did some sanding on the hood and fenders the other day. I told her yesterday that if she wants to start sanding and sandblasting on her Super 55 as soon as I get this one out of the way, that I'd get that pained for her. She said it's too hot to be sandblasting right now. I told her it's supposed to cool down next week. lol

Looking good Randy. Post some pictures of the finished job if you would please. Always like looking at members projects on the go

Will do Jim. I was thinking about you the other day when I got the bolts out of the bag.
