6 or 12 volt?

I've been looking at a 1950 77 for a friend with a starter that won't crank the engine at all-usually just a click and "unnh". No solenoid involved, just the big stomp on it type switch on the dash. It will
crank/start intermittently and run well. He's already put a remac starter on it. Shorting the starter switch doesn't help, nor does jumping direct from the new and charged 6v battery to the starter. Cables
seem OK with no resistance, but am replacing anyway. It has a negative ground & I think it could be pos ground? But he says when it's running the amp meter reads the way it should, and that shouldn't matter
to the starter anyway. We've used a lot of hot lubricating words on it. What should be looking/trying next?????

Thanks!

Pull the starter button apart and clean up the contacts or just replace it if you dont want to mess with it. Just had to replace a push button in a new to us 66 because it was doing the same thing. Also on a side note, even though you put a reman starter on it doesnt mean the starter is any good either. We have had freshly rebuilt starters fail on the first or second start because all most repair shops can get now are junk china armatures. The guy at our repair shop told us that when he buys a new armature he just goes ahead and orders 3 because he knows that at least 2 will be junk right out of the box.

The "kick" starters were on the diesels, and they were 12V. Post the Delco number from your starter. The gas tractors were 6V and had a push button on the dash. Although there have been many fingers in the pie since Charles City and you, and yours may have had a field expedient modification.

Poor connection at the cables or the starter it self will cause that or he may have gotten a bad new starter seen that also. As for the cables them self being good seen more the none that was bad but yet looked and read to be good but where not. You need cables on 6 volts that are 0 or 00

for us that might need a refresher on battery cables, what is the difference between 12 volt battery cables and the 0 or 00 cables that you mention for the 6 volt?
