1755 Fuel level not registering

The fuel level is not registering. Is it possible to determine what is bad, the gauge or the sending unit ?

make sure you have 12v at the sender, if not figure out why, take the wire off of the sender and touch it to clean metal to ground it out, needle should go to full, if it does then everything going back to the gauge is good and the problem is with the sender

Thanks brutus: We do have 12v to the sending unit, I did touch the wire to a clean ground (which I didn't know I could do) and the gauge pegged as you said. So what now? Pull the sending unit out of the tank? Is the sending unit something that can be repaired?

I was just thinking about that this morning while I was raking hay. The one on my 1550 has never worked. I put a new sending unit in it and it won't work while it's in the tank. I can pull it out and move the arm and the gauge moves. Somebody told me to put a ground wire to one of the screws that holds it in the tank. I did and it still didn't fix it. You might try that. If it works, you had better luck than I did.

It's the sending unit in the tank.
You will see what's wrong with it when u pull it out.
Doesn't look like a thing that can be repaired or at
least mine wasn't. The 4 diget series Oliver's
Use the same or close to in all there tanks. Easy fix,
pull hood off and 5-6 screws to pull sender out.
Always feels good to have stuff working.

Did you check if the float floats. My 1550 gauge doesn't work but the needle jumps to E when the key is on so I suspected it does. I reached in with a wire hook and raised the float arm and it worked. Haven't fixed it yet but now I know what to do.

Thank you to all of you that have responded to my needs. I solved my problem. I had 2 issues. 1) the sending unit needs a good ground (which I didn't have), the tank needs the good ground as well. 2) My float has some fluid in it, not sure how much, but I can hear some swishing when I shake it. It is a brass float. Any one know where to get a new float. On mine, the float is soldered to the arm made of wire, and it appears, I just need a new arm/float and not the entire sending unit. It looks like the arm is crimped on the the sending unit, and if I'm careful I might be able to un-crimp it and save it. Whats a new sending unit cost?

rr- You may want to check that the terminal sticking out of the top of the sending unit isn't touching the underside of the hood. My new sending unit only worked with the hood off until I filed the terminal down about a quarter inch.

I got my new one from Prime Instruments along with new gauges for a White 2-70 that are about identical to the originals.

I put a new sending unit in the 1800, cleaned up the ground and worked fine no more running out of
#2 on the back side of the farm.

Glad to help. I about fell over as a person doesn't usually get a thanks or even a response on here. It is appreciated.
