question i have it , how much black smoke should this 310 engine be putting out ? , under no load, at operating temp. it runs fairly clean of smoke , put it under load & black smoke will roll . engine has a complete overhaul , head set up properly , pump rebuilt , injectors tested good ,rebuilt turbo , fires up very quick , runs great just seems like to much black smoke ,I did advance the timing maybe 2 deg & cleared up some of it , yes i know the service bulletin says to set @ TDC , is it possible the shop just set the pump to fuel it that hard? 2nd question is did these 310's at idle have what i call a cam'ed up sound ( for lack of a better term) not much but still sounds mean at idle , around 900 RPM smooths out , there again engine starts & runs great ,checked exhaust manifold temps at each cyl. 1 & 6 are a little colder (40-50 deg) then the rest but thats normal , other cyls. are the same temp. all the way across. im not really worried of something being wrong just wondering what you guys think?

the one I'm around does smoke if working. what rpm do you idle at, imop most diesels need set at 825 to 900 to idle and not lope I just set the idle at the rpm the engine likes to not lope

my idle is set at 650 RPM , thats what it should be so the book says , but like you said it will smooth out 8 - 900 R's

are you sure that's not the gas idle at 650. my opinion is that's way to low for a 6cyl .if its right no wonder they had so much trouble with wrist pins

We have a 1955 and a 1950-T. The 55 has a fresh motor in it with the pump turned up 10 percent and new injectors. Never had it on a Dyno but the Diesel shop said she should be good for 125 horse the way its set up. I have had that thing on an 11 shank Oliver 456 chisel in hard clay pulling 12 inches deep just pulling her guts out and it will just give the slightest hint of black smoke. Now the 1950-T, im not sure how much the motor has been played with because we havent had to touch the pump yet but it will make that 55 look like its a gutless wonder. Im guessing its got to have at least another 10 horse more because it will pull the same stuff deeper in the same gear, or faster at the same depth. Its the same way though, pull her right down to her knees and it will just give the slightest hint of black smoke but thats about it. As for the loping, im pretty sure thats just a Roosa Master pump thing. Both our 19's do it at an idle, our 1800 diesel does it at an idle, and I have even heard other colored tractors with Roosa Master pumps lope when idling. Its just what they seem to do.

Mine has the rough idle til maybe 900 rpm. At 750 it is pretty noticeable. I had the injectors and pump rebuilt recently, and the fuel is 12% over. It smokes some on a hard pill, but I wouldn't say it's rolling coal.

Our 1750 with a 1950T engine in will not smoke much at all under full load with pump maxed out above 150hp. The turbo hot housing on an 1855 is larger allowing the turbo not to spin as fast. The turbo on a 1855 just created a small amount of boost. One off a 1950t or such should have a smaller housing making it spin faster and more boost to burn the fuel. Either that or a 5.9 cummins turbo.

My 310T with Roosamaster lopes at idle. Clears up once it warms up. Sounds cool but not sure is healthy. Usually bump idle up to 850-900 RPM to smooth it out. Regarding smoke, doesn't sound right. Thinking torque (smoke) screw not set quite right. Try turning in (CW) a couple turns. Won't hurt anything.

will a 5.9 cummins turbo work on the 310 engine , i had my turbo rebuilt because the exchange turbo they tryed to give me had bigger intake & exhaust side & would not run my engine it smoked like crazy , so i may already have the smaller housing your referring too , it also whistles like crazy , under hard load the aircleaner light comes on because it sucks that hard , light comes on at 5 psi so book says , filter is good because light comes on with or without filter. maybe the timing mark is off at the flywheel & need more advance to get it where it wants to be ? i know the update says TDC for timing but it was built to run @ 2-4 deg advance & with fresh engine with all internal upgrades i dont think it would hurt to go back to 4 deg adv. on this engine . any thoughts from you all on that?

So turning the smoke screw in decreases injector
pump output and backing it out gives more fuel? It's
been awhile since I played with one of those, had
one on a 4020 once

Correct. Turning in reduces max fuel. I think best description is a stop/limit for the governor max setting. You may need to turn it in several turns (revolutions) to make a difference.
