smoke screw

Does anyone know the factory setting per turns on a smoke screw for a s77 with a American Bosch pump. The ITT manual is a little confusing

Don't understand your question, turning the nut clockwise increases fuel at full load, CCW to decrease the full load fuel. Under full load, if you have any smoke to speak of then more fuel won't make any more power, just more smoke. If it's set on the test bench the operator needs to know what tractor pump is used on. American Bosch used one pump for a given year range of tractors, example, 77, 88, 99 used the same pump, only difference of max fuel setting.

Ok forgive my lack or explanation I'm new to diesels. When the tractor lugs down and works at full throttle there is blackish smoke. I guess my question is, is that how it should operate and at what lever is to much smoke. I have a 1955 super 77 with the American Bosch PSB6a 1600 rpm

If it smokes heavy black under load, turning the nut to the left will decrease the smoke level. One thing to remember, fuel MAY have been turned up to help overcome a worn injection pump hydraulic head. Turning the fuel down will also decrease the starting fuel delivery too. When the head/plunger wear is bad enough it will first show up with a no start when hot problem.

Are you using the tractor to farm with, pulling it or what? Do you have a dynometer you an use? Sometimes advancing the timing one set of holes will increase the lugging ability and horse power as well.
