I am looking at "58" 550 Cockshutt row crop gas, any advice on weak spots to look for other than the obvious things? Thanks DTK

The hydraulic pump drive gears are commonly worn out and expensive to replace. The Hercules is a good engine, but parts can be costly and hard to come by.

First let me say I love these tractors so my response is not meant to disillusion you. GO198 Hercules is a great engine but is prone to cracked blocks both internal and external and some parts are hard to get and expensive. Taken care of properly this engine will run for a life time with very little problems. Chassis issues. As all ready mentioned hydraulic pump drive gears. They are now available but expensive and to do it right should be changed as a set. Check the lower left corner of rear end housing where 3 point lift cylinder mounts. This corner tends to get broken and usually a ugly repair is used. Also look at axel housings as they like to crack near ends or where fenders mount also if it has fixed hubs check to see if they are loose. If it has power steering then the Gemler unit can be a problem but once repaired correctly they are dependable. If adjustable wide check housing for cracks or repairs usually on back lower side. Most of these issues are from a tractor abused with a bucket loader of just not maintained. Irv
